 About the City

In 1989 the first local council was elected for the first time and in 1994 Rahat received the status of a rightful city in Israel, with jurisdiction area of app. 20,000 dunams. The first tribe on whose territory the settlement was declared about is the Al-Oubra tribe.

Rahat is one of the seven Negev towns planned to concentrate the Bedouin population. The number of its residents, including periphery, is app. 45,000.

The meaning of the name "Rahat" in Arabic is a 'group of people living together'.

 City Mayor

Mr. Talal Alkarinawi

 City Mayor Foreword

We're laboring to make Rahat an exemplary city for the best benefit of the residents and visitors. Our efforts are focused on the development of jobs, building of educational institutions, establishment of culture institutions for the young, development and expansion of the city and provision of solutions to the housing problems of the young generation.

 Future Projects

Parallel to the development and expansion of the city, there is a new outline plan, linked to the metropolis plan of Beer-Sheva. The plan proposes establishment of secondary metropolitan area in the vicinity of Rahat and joint employment zone with Bnei Shimon and Lehavim regional councils.

One of the largest programs in progress is the one concerning the doubling of Rahat. According to this program, 4,500 apartments are planned to be built at the first stage, when the final number of planned apartments is 10,0000. This building effort comes simultaneously with the construction of public and commercial institutions, employment centers for women and public areas including neighborhood parks and playing grounds for children.

 Education

Rahat has app. 16,000 pupils attending 13 elementary schools, 3 junior-highs, 4 comprehensive schools and 120 kindergartens. The city dedicates special attention to the fostering of educational institutions shared by both genders. There are 8 elementary schools, one humanitarian and one technological high school. Even though the Bedouins in Rahat and in other places are aware to the importance of education, they encourage their daughters to leave school at the age of junior-high. Their claim is that it is better for the daughter to help her mother at home instead of being influenced by freedom and modernization.

Recently we've witnessed a phenomenon of girls dropping in the 12th grade, due to the disappointment from the employment options available to high school, graduates.

 Benefits in Housing

Within the frames of the special campaign the Israel Land Authority grants Rahat's residents free-of-charge lands to build their houses at varying levels of density - from a single family to saturated construction - when the buyers would be called to pay only for the development of the infrastructures. The dwellers of Rahat's periphery will receive lands, including development, free of any charge. The costs of development for buyers are expected to be in the 40,000-100,000 NIS range, according to the size of the lot and construction rights.
