Central Negev/Ramat Negev Regional Council/Revivim

 Community Location

Revivim, belonging to Ramat Negev regional council, is located to the west of Mashabi Sade on Mashabi Sade - Zeelim Road, 35 km from Beer-Sheva.

 General Information

Revivim is a secular kibbutz of 117 families. In order to serve the community, the founders of Revivim, already at the early stages of the kibbutz, decided to put a strong emphasis on culture and education. Already in the 1950's they believed that even those living in the distant Negev deserve quality of culture, and founded 'Beit Eliyahu Golomb', a compound that includes library, memorial room for the fallen, members club and a small hall to host shows.

At the same time, Revivim also established an educational system for its children. This system operated an elementary school that was open for several decades and in the early years even a high school.

Since the beginning of the 1990's Revivim children are being sent to attend their high school studies in "Eshel Hanassi" educational community and the primary school children are sent to the shared school of Mash'abim regional council in "Mashabi Sade". At the same time, Revivim also takes care for the higher education and supplementary studies for its members, and most of all to the young ones. In the recent years, with the increased ageing of many Revivim residents, the emphasis was expanded to other community service areas - health and welfare, which currently provide these extended services to the adults of the local community, as well as to the other residents. Recently a special welfare services wing was founded, supposed to concentrate the activities and treatment of Revivim members reaching the third age.

Revivim's Motto: Even today, just like in the past, many of Revivim's residents continue, with the same primordial spirit of firm standing against the odds and nature, with the building of a socially, educationally, culturally and economically successful community - at the heart of the Negev. We're approaching you, the interested, willing and able person to join us in the challenging and satisfying making of sustaining a Jewish settlement in the Negev.

Absorption Process:

*           The kibbutz of Revivim is interested to swell its population with quality young families and singles that can contribute to and enjoy the contribution from the membership in our community. In order to achieve this goal Revivim has an operating absorption committee whose role is to locate the fitting candidates, check their suitability for the kibbutz and to escort their integration.

*           The absorption process in Revivim is divided into two main parts: sorting process before arrival to the kibbutz and the main phase - actual absorption in Revivim.

*           The first stage includes initial sorting interviews conducted at the demographic department of the TKM (United Kibbutzim Movement). The second stage takes place at the current homes of the candidates - committee representatives visit the candidates to get an impression and to present the kibbutz. After that the candidates are invited for two visits at the kibbutz, to achieve the same purposes - impression and acquaintance. Additionally, the candidates would be asked to undertake settlement adjustment test at the diagnosis institution.

*           In the case the previous stages are completed to the full satisfaction of both parties and the candidates indeed move into the kibbutz, we're entering the major part of the absorption - staying in the kibbutz. This stage takes two years, divided into two parts: absorption and candidacy. At the end of each stage a public voting concerning the candidates takes place. The purpose of this period is twofold - on one hand to proceed with the examination whether the candidates fit the kibbutz, and vice verse, and on the other - escorting the candidates along their absorption process with the intention to achieve their full integration in the kibbutz. In order to do that the candidates are accompanied by senior kibbutz members acting as mentors, whose role is to accompany their absorption process.

*           Revivim already absorbed several young singles before the age of 30 and 40- families with up to two children.

 History

The kibbutz was founded in 1943. The name "Revivim" was given by Berl Katzenelson, one of the leaders of the Workers Movement in Israel. Katzenelson wanted to emphasize, through that name, the linkage of the new settlement to the mother-kibbutz of Giv'at Brener (the writer Y.H Brener, who gave it's name to Giv'at Brener, edited at that time a journal called "Revivim"). The first members came from the youth movement in Giv'at Brener.

Foundation Process: In 1938 a training company was founded in Rishon Le Zion for the core that was supposed to found Revivim. After the allocation of the land 12 members arrived to the current location. During its construction stages the settlement was called "Tel Ha-Tzofim", after the pioneer outpost that was located there and was supposed to check the feasibility of settlement in the Negev, together with two other outposts: Gvulot and Beit-Eshel.

Special Events: The first group of settlers lived in a cave. Its first mission was to mark the boundaries of the allocated land territory by plowing a furrow that encircled this land lot.
